The CPE modem settings is reached by opening the browsing and going to http://192.168.1.1 . Every browser seems to work perfectly here except opera 10.6 which tends to give a “connection closed” error while trying to log in, this can be remedied by simply reloading the page.

If it is your first time accessing this interface you will be asked to set a password. Upon setting the password you will have access to the settings area where you will be able to view your signal strength as well as configure your WLAN settings.

The CPE is powered by an external power adapter supplying 12v DC and thus is more of a fixed solution than the usb dongle, which can be taken about in your pocket. There are also features such as the future VOIP service and the 4 LAN ports that suggest that its best kept in one location.

All major WLAN encryption methods are provided:

USB dongle

The universal serial bus (USB) dongle is small, light and easily transported from one location to another. The USB modem does what it should do well, however you will experience problems if you live or stay for extended periods in REALLY REALLY REALLY rural areas (again check my google maps location in the 3rd section). In more urban areas such as the heart of Linstead I was able to get full signal and speed even while behind thick walls of reinforced concrete (don’t ask me, I am not sure why an internet café was built like a bomb shelter) and had no problems whatsoever.
You are presented with a wizard to install the modem drivers as soon as you insert the USB dongle into a usb port. Installation is easy and takes just about 5 minutes.

Appreciate the info- this is very useful for deep rural users like me who are often left out because we aren’t in Kingston. I really want to invest in a Digicel modem to access the 4G speed but do not want my money wasted. Looking forward to the upcoming articles, especially the maps.

Actually the overall performance have decreased drastically since I wrote this review some months ago. I should have written a follow up review a few months ago but did not have the time.

OK. Should I wait for yur next review before purchase? A colleague of mine bought the CPE modem recently and so far is satisfied. But he’s in St. Ann’s Bay –I’m more rural than he, so am still being cautious. If signal strength is dropping, I may be worst off. Maybe U could give Digicel a heads up for us.

I like in Treadways, 4km north east of the Linstead tower and my modem have to be on the roof to get any connection :) .. But that is not it, I am getting RSSi -79 or just about 2 bars, however I only get 74kbps max and 34 kbps under normal circumstances… it has become that bad in my area.

I dont want to burst you bubble but wait till my final wrap up in the first month of the new year.

Anyone knows if I can configure the CPE modem and then plug it into the car cigarette lighter outlet to get WiFi on the Go?
