Tech tutorials, howtos and walkthroughs

Well, folks, this was bound to happen sooner or later right? Warner Brothers has inked a deal with the Creator of MineCraft and head of the Game Developer Studio Mojang, , Markus “Notch” Perssons, who lives in Sweden, to make a movie about the popular Community Brick-Building Game, MineCraft.

When this bit of news popped up in my Twitter Feed, I thought it was yet another attempt by Hollywood to make another Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil, the last set of movies adapted from Games I knew that were commercially successful. You known, a movie based on a popular Video Game. Suggestions have been flying with regards to the Xbox’s Halo universe being made into a movie since 2005…..but without a single reel of film actually being used to make same.

But it wasn’t as ironically, as Markus Perssons himself quietly and calmly leaked the news on no better place than Twitter, where he has quite the following!

Someone is trying leak the fact that we’re working with Warner Brothers on a potential MineCraft Movie. I wanted to be the leak!

MineCraft the Movie – 100 Million MineCraft Community Strong means Success in any language

So it’s not a rumour, as Mojang’s Creator’s making no bones about posting this on his Twitter Feed. Let the parody and Fake movie Trailers of MineCraft Begin! Similarly too, fans of Bioshock and Gears of War and Metal Gear Solid have been trumpeting possible adaptations for the silver screen, but so far nothing concrete.

Most Video Game adaptations to movie never fare well, mainly because these Video Games are a guy thing; young adolescent males fragging away in the dark with only the Television or Computer screen to light up their lives. At least World of Warcraft which will be directed by Brit Duncan Jones started filming in January 2014 with a 2016 launch date.

From my experience, a Video Game has to be really popular with an awful lot of normal people (read non-teenagers) and has a strong cast of well known stars or really good actors before it can guarantee the commercial success of say Tron or even Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Since silently going viral back in 2011 at which time I began following their meteoric rise in my first article MineCraft – Indie hit is Social Gaming’s Cinderella, MineCraft has grown from strength to strength as the stats of the MineCraft community indicate:

  1. 100 Million Users

  2. 14.3% or 14.3 million have purchased the Game

Thanks to its massive online community, MineCraft has transitioned from one platform to another, becoming popular on Video Game Platforms. again some more impressive numbers that have me amazed, given that all this Game involves is building stuff out of 2D-ish bricks:

  • 10 million copies each downloaded from the Google Play Store and the Apple iTunes store
  • 1 million copies have been downloaded on the PlayStation 3 since December 2013 Launch

MineCraft is now MineCraft for the Xbox 360; awaiting with bated breath its appearance on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita Platforms. Mojang’s MineCraft won’t save Video Game Consoles, but it sure as hell will bring some of that 100 million strong MineCraft Community to a whole new Brick building Ground, literally.

Here’s a nice list of some movies made from Videos Games and see if any stand out as favourites:

  1. Super Mario Bros. (1993)

  2. Street Fighter (1994)

  3. Double Dragon (1994)

  4. Mortal Kombat (1995)

  5. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

  6. Resident Evil (2002)

  7. House of the Dead (2003)

  8. Doom (2005)

  9. Alone in the Dark (2005)

  10. Silent Hill (2006)

  11. DOA: Dead or Alive (2006)

  12. Hitman (2007)

  13. Max Payne (2008)

  14. Far Cry (2008)

  15. Tekken (2010)

  16. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

MineCraft’s has the Video Game Console Following – Huge potential in Action figures for merchandizing

MineCraft seems to be related more to The Lego Movie, which is the ONLY possible reason why I think anyone would sit to watch a movie about people mindlessly etching away hours building castles out of bricks. Certainly I did like the map of the English countryside being built by Great Britain’s Governmental-mapping Agency Ordnance Survey via a MineCraft rendering as reported in Map of Great Britain in MineCraft is a Brick Builders Dream Landscape made Real.

I’m still not feeling how this would make a great movie, albeit I can see the connection to the Lego Movie as Lego Bricks and 3D Rendering have already been made of MineCraft buildings as stated in MineCraft Apple iPhone and iPad making brick building Games Social and hence the reason why Warner Brothers would see success in such an adaptation.

That and the fact that making Action figures for merchandizing would be really easy albeit difficult to control now that we live in a world of 3D Printing as noted in 3D Printers, the next big Revolution in Printing, heralds the coming of Quantum Teleportation. Once these 3D Printers become popular, reproductions of classical Action Figures will be as easy as getting the 3D Renderings from MineCraft!

But after all, it’s all about the Community. Expect to see a massive show of support when this movie comes out! For now, I’ve begun saving up my Bitcoins to buy some MineCraft LEGO Bricks! More on that in another article!
